Close up of Steinway & Sons Model D loudspeaker

Susi von den Stemmen, a profilic journalists writing for cars, travels, sports and many other lifestyle topics, visited the Steinway Lyngdorf headquarter to see how the loudspeakers and electronics are made, and to experience first-hand how a Steinway & Sons audio systems sounds like. Here are some of her impressions:

“Welcome to Steinway Lyngdorf – a place where you can exchange the tranquillity of Denmark for what is perhaps the most radical musical experience in the world.”

“From the outside, the factory looks unspectacular: a few halls, clean lines, Scandinavian simplicity. Inside, however, black lacquer gleams like freshly tuned grand pianos, bronze frames shimmer, and loudspeakers stand like sculptures in a museum. This is not a place for tinkering; this is a place for building sound.”

“The first listening is not a concert, it’s a revelation. Two speakers, an inconspicuous sound calibration – and suddenly a stage opens up that seems larger than any concert hall. Strings emerge out of nowhere, singers stand in the room as if they were physically present. No sound colouration, no harshness, just pure truth in the sound. Anyone who thinks they know music will realise here that what they knew before was only a sketch.”

“People travel to Denmark to find peace and quiet. I travelled to Skive – and lost my peace and quiet. Because when a Steinway Lyngdorf system gets going, there’s no room left for background noise. Only for what really matters: music so real, so clear, so alive that even Beethoven would get goosebumps.”

FIDELITY Award 2024 for Model A

Model A speakers with Fidelity award

FIDELITY magazine from Germany made a full Steinway Lyngdorf tour: They visited Steinway & Sons in Hamburg to experience how the pianos are made, listened to the legendary Model D at an interieur designer’s place, visited the Steinway Lyngdorf production facility in Denmark, and finished the tour with listening to the Model A speakers at the German distributor Drei-H. They were so impressed that they awarded the complete Model A system to be one of the product highlights of the year. Here is their official jury comment:

“The Steinway Lyngdorf sound systems merge the tradition and build quality of Steinway & Sons pianos with the intricate hi-fi technology from Lyngdorf: The electronics of the Model A are housed separately and feature an integrated network player as well as digital room correction which ensures that this exquisite system always plays at its best, no matter the environment. The Danish manufacturer’s unique digital amplifiers provide exceptional dynamics and musicality. Is this just a loudspeaker or actually art? “

Close up af Model S-15

Martin Dew from Home Theater Forum has compared a Steinway Lyngdorf system with a Lyngdorf Audio system. The goal was not necessarily to identify the finest home theater, but to pinpoint the audio characteristics.

Below, you can read his final thoughts, and at the bottom of the page you can find a link to the whole comparison.

“Okay, if money were no object, I would order a Steinway integrated system in a shot. Done. That was easy. It is ultra-cool to have that name embossed on the same multi-stage gloss lacquer used for the company’s legendary pianos. In terms of performance, you just get the feeling with the Steinway gear that there is nothing standing between you and the source…and I mean nothing. If that gives them a slight edge over Lyngdorf, then so be it, but both systems are rock solid and phenomenal in execution.

I will not pretend that there is anything attractive about the price of these systems, but we all need tech we can dream about. It may be that the wizardry found in the RoomPerfect calibration system will trickle down into more affordable components one day. In the meantime, Lyngdorf Audio is making some of the magic available to less well-heeled clients in the form of the MP- processors and SDA- amps. If you are planning to spend $10k on a projector, for example, then you should definitely be thinking about Lyngdorf for your electronics.

Finally, I so appreciate what Steinway Lyngdorf is doing for the audio community. Their products have nothing short of made me re-evaluate what it is I love about music and movies. And that’s saying something.”
